West
Virginia Mountaineer is an American football team that represents West Virginia
University (commonly known as WVU). It represents West Virginia University in
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I FBS. The team is
currently located in Morgantown, West Virginia. The history of the team goes
long back to the nineteenth century. Though the team was built in 1890 but it
team played its first season in 1891.
The home
stadium of the team is Milan Puskar Stadium which has a capacity for 60,000
audiences to sit and watch the match. Rob Alsop is the athletic director of the
team while Neal Brown is the head coach. Neal Brown was a player before he
started coaching. That is why his influence of him on the team is very
crucial.
In the beginning,
the team played without any conference as an independent team. The team
remained independent for thirty-three years until 1925. Then WVIAC was the
conference of the team for a very limited time (1925-1927). After WVIAC, the
team started playing again independently without any conference for almost 22
years. But in 1950, SoCon became the conference of the team for the era of
1950-1967. After that, the team remained independent in the era (1968- 1990).
Big East was the conference of the team for 20 years (1991-2011). Currently,
the conference of the West Virginia Mountaineer football is the Big 12
Conference.
As far as
records and titles are concerned, the team looks impressive. The All-Time
record of the West Virginia Mountaineer football team is 769-514-45 (.596).
Whereas the Bowl record of the team is 16-23 (.410). The West Virginia
Mountaineer football team holds 15 conference titles. Out of 15 titles, the
team won 8 titles (1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1964, 1965, 1957) under the
SoCon whereas 7 titles (1993, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2011) were won
under the Big East.
Like titles, the team also has
quite a lot of rivalries. The team has almost 7 biggest rivalries. These
rivalry teams include Marshall, Maryland, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse,
